Filipe Toledo Wins Jbay Open
It was the kind of performance that lit up your text chains, flooded your Instagram feeds and made you rethink performance surfing. Filipe Toledo didn’t just win the 2017 Corona J-Bay Open, he owned it.
And what a contest to own! The event saw picture perfect J-Bay — the entire time. Boats rode set waves. Great whites cruised the lineup. Another shark breached 100 yards away from the surfers (during Filipe’s round 5 heat, which needed to be resurfed). And it was during that resurf that Filipe put on the show of a lifetime, riding what many are calling the best wave ever ridden in competition — one that saw two sky-high alley-oops and a handful of surgeon-like carves. A perfect 10, of course. But the best part? He performed from beginning to end, producing heat totals over 18 points in four of his six heats. And in the final 35 minutes of the contest, Filipe edged out fellow Monster Energy team rider Frederico Morais — the Portuguese rookie that surfed the event with poise, power and ice in his veins.
